Swan Lake, just a 15 or 20 minute drive north from the ocean has been a summer retreat for local residents since the early 1900s. The water level is controlled by a dam; the maximum depth is 87’ and the surface area is 1,300 acres. It’s long enough to easily land a single engine plane with pontoons in front of your cottage! A distant fresh water relative of the better known Toddy Ponds in Hancock County is located inland in the Waldo County towns of Brooks and Swanville, also called "Toddy Pond". This pond is a little secret with only 8 or 9 cottages on its shores. One of those cottages is for sale! This Toddy Pond is just 150 acres with a maximum depth of 25 feet and is fed by a stream that brings in brook trout (you will also find salmon, whitefish and pickerel in the pond). The depth at the frontage of this cottage is about 10 or 12 feet, but the deepest place is around the small island in the middle of the pond. This Toddy is a great place for fishing, kayaking and canoeing, but not so much for swimming. The modest cottage was built on a 2 acre lot in 1990 and retains its fresh, new smell and look. Although it has no well or septic, pond water is pumped to the sink and there is a holding tank for grey water. There is an outhouse a short walk away (a one-seater). The cottage sits up the bank above the water with a screened porch overlooking the pond. There is just one loft bedroom but a pull-out sofa can accommodate another couple. The property has 160 feet on the pond with a good launch area for your kayak in front of the cottage. If you like bugs, birds, fish and solitude, this could be the place for you!

Located in an intentional community of about 10 lake-front seasonal homes on over 30 acres with building envelopes providing visual privacy from the others, this cottage is one of my favorites. The Sheepscot Shore Colony is among the nicest places to spend summers on the lake in this area. The Colony Owners' Association employs a caretaker for the gardens and road system through the Colony. This cottage is a "Kit House" because it was ordered from Sears in the early 1960s and was delivered in numbered pieces to be erected on site. It is seasonal because, although it has water from a shared well, a septic system and electric baseboard heat, it sits on concrete posts rather than a full concrete basement. (If a new owner wanted to convert it to year-round, however, it could be done.) Two-thirds of the 700 sq.ft. cottage is living space featuring a large stone fireplace and two bedrooms and one-third is a deck facing the water. Half the deck is screened-in for dining in the evening when there are usually more mosquitoes and half the deck is open for day-time use. The roof over the decks has several skylights to reduce the darkening effect of so much roof. To ensure privacy, this 1.4 acre property includes 284' of waterfront (!) consisting of two lots side-by-side; one holds the cottage and one is never to be developed, to be kept in its natural state.
