Gingerbread House in Belfast
Built in 1905, this home is an excellent example of the architectural
Queen Anne Victorian style displaying the typical columns, extensive broad
porches punctuated by a gazebo on one corner, stained glass windows and
lavish, lacy gingerbread trim applied in many areas. The formal first
floor has two fireplaces, fancifully carved or appliquéd oak flourishes
on the woodwork, wainscoting along the staircase and Tudor leaded glass
windows. My favorite feature is the dumbwaiter system originally installed
to raise the food to the pantry from the basement where food was stored
and delivered via a service entrance in the rear. With 14 rooms (3,000
sq. ft.) it is a comfortable 6 bedroom private residence with 4 bathrooms
and a powder room, but 15 years ago it was a 5 guest room B&B that served
a full breakfast on the porch or in the formal dining room. The landscaped
grounds promise flowers from spring to fall. Located just 2 blocks from
a public walking right-of-way to Penobscot Bay, it is close enough to
pack a picnic lunch and enjoy seaside lunches every weekend. The home
faces an avenue that is one of just a few in town with a designated bicycle
lane in both directions so you can either walk or pedal to town for errands,
dinner or a show. There is a partial view of the ocean from some windows
on the east side of the house. A detached 2-bay carriage house has the
original bead board still intact inside. $595,000.

Belfast Heavenly Home
This property is among my favorites in the Belfast area! Built in 1907
as a chapter of the Christian Scientist Church, it flourished in the 1920s
through the 1940s, but by the 1960s the Church's loyal few were unable
to maintain the building. To raise needed funds they sold the original
stained glass windows to other churches and sold the bell from the bell
tower to the Marine Museum in Searsport.
By the 1990s no one was using the Reading Room, Sunday School area or
sanctuary, so the building was de-commissioned as a church and was sold
to a local family as a home. Beginning with new plumbing, wiring, heating,
insulation in the ceilings, new cedar roof shingles, new gutters and new
Pella windows the building was ready to be decorated and enjoyed.
Known locally as "The Little Stone Church on Meetinghouse Hill", it is
now a blend of reverence, Martha Stewart and Tasha Tudor. Beginning in
the former Pastor's parking space that has been transformed into a garden
courtyard with a stone angel bench, a wrought iron fence, lush plants,
stone walkway and lawn and crowned by a potting shed that doubles as a
tearoom (You have got to see it!) you get the idea you are somewhere other
than Maine.
There is no "kitchen feeling" in the kitchen because what you see is
stone floors, antiquity stone tiles on the wall, church benches, Gothic
windows and appliances like the refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave
are hidden from sight. In one bedroom, the headboard of the bed is actually
the interior of the original main entrance doors. The former sanctuary
is now a 26' X 32' Great Room tastefully decorated, but that could easily
again accommodate a large congregation. Situated on a 1.8 acre lot, there
are 6 rooms (3 bedrooms), 1,730 sq.ft., with a paved driveway. I enjoy
showing this home because I enjoy BEING there! You will, too. $795,000.

Searsport's Homeport Inn
The widow's walk atop this 1860 sea captain's home was actually used
by the wife and children of the captain as they scanned the ocean's horizon
for the captain. The ocean is still visible from several of the 19 rooms
in this historic mansion. The Inn has been operated as a B&B by the
same owners for the last 30 years and includes 13 bedrooms, two apartments
and a fully operational English Pub with a large working fireplace. In
addition to the formal dining room and the sunny breakfast room in the
Inn, the Pub has a restaurant/Function room with tables, chairs and tablecloths.
The Inn and Pub are fully furnished and decorated with antiques (the bar
in the Pub even has the liquor!) so all you need to add is the food and
be ready to receive guests. With 13 bedrooms, 8 full baths and two half
baths this property could also be a private showcase home for an extended
family. This 1.5 acre property is located a couple blocks from the Penobscot
Marine Museum in town with its art gallery, historic homes and genealogy
library and a few hundred feet from the ocean beach. $895,000.

Historic Belfast Colonial
Built in 1872, this home is in the Historic District of Belfast. If you
visit the Belfast Historical Museum you will find many old photos and
references to this house over the years since it was built. Located on
a corner lot about a third of an acre in size, it has an attached barn
and a private back yard. There is a second floor in-law apartment over
the barn in this 12 room house with 3,600 sq.ft. of living space. A home
with grace and charm, there is a side porch for your rocking chairs, a
formal dining room, two parlors, fireplaces, and a unique wood-heated
laundry tub that's part of the kitchen chimney masonry. A couple blocks
away is the Public Library, Post Office, banks, restaurants, art galleries,
a book store and the ocean to enjoy. This home is located in a neighborhood
of other fine homes. $330,000.

Belfast Victorian
The smaller scale of this home built in 1910 makes it manageable for
housework and maintenance through the years. It has 2 bedrooms and one
bathroom, natural wood floors, a built-in china closet in the dining room
and a remodeled kitchen that retained the built-in original cabinets.
The quarter of an acre lot has a back yard, but it is located beside a
city park used mostly for picnics and softball games, so there is lots
of extra space available to enjoy the outdoors. There is a two-car garage
and a glassed-in porch on the front of the house. This home is just a
short distance from The Muck, down-town shopping, schools and the primary
grocery store. $199,500.
